The Thinking Woman's Guide to Real Magic

The Thinking Woman's Guide to Real Magic - Emily Croy Barker The cover and the title reminded me very much of A Discovery of Witches for some reason. That's basically the only reason I picked this book up.
So far, I'm feeling ambivalent.

ETA: I think I would have been okay if the middle 300ish pages had accidentally fallen out of my copy. But they didn't, so I read on.
It was okay. A lot of stuff happened - probably too much to jam into one book, honestly.

The worst part? The names are unique and the book wasn't anything to write home about, which led me to my old standby of pronouncing the names any ol' way I wanted. The main dude became Eärendil because I like the LOTR books, the witch lady became Herjerkis because why not … you get the idea.

Overall impression:
Book was fine.
Not stoked about reading a sequal.

Sisterland

Sisterland - Curtis Sittenfeld, Rebecca Lowman Well, I didn't see that coming.

That is all.

Rags & Bones

Rags & Bones: New Twists on Timeless Tales - Holly Black, Kelley Armstrong, Rick Yancey, Neil Gaiman, Carrie Ryan, Saladin Ahmed, Melissa Marr, Margaret Stohl, Kami Garcia, Tim Pratt, Gene Wolfe, Garth Nix, Charles Vess As previously noted, I hate short stories. But there was a retelling of the Monkey's Paw, which meant I was in.

I skipped the stories that bored me, but I read more than half of them. I approve.

Deadline (Newsflesh, Book 2)

Deadline - Mira Grant Dang it. I really like this series.

Fire and Ash (Benny Imura, #4)

Fire and Ash - Jonathan Maberry Fine, the ends were wrapped up nicely. Whatever. I still hold to my opinion that this was an unnecessary addition to the series. Sometimes the ends don't need to be tied. It's okay to wonder what happened.

I wonder what would have happened if I hadn't had to read this...

Feed (Newsflesh, Book 1)

Feed - Mira Grant I really liked this book. Although, let's be honest, I kept waiting for the time when George and Sean would start making out, but I hope that's just from the way the audiobook was being read.

Also, I'd like to think I'd be as kick-ass as Georgia in the event of the "End Times," but I'd probably be total wiener.

After Dead: What Came Next in the World of Sookie Stackhouse

After Dead: What Came Next in the World of Sookie Stackhouse - Charlaine Harris I guess it was nice to see what happened to the characters, but to be totally honest, I don't remember 90% of the people she catalogued. This whole idea could have been done cheaper with just a post on her site. "Hey, here's what Pam, Eric, Bill and Sookie are up to."

But then she wouldn't be able to collect the profits, so maybe this did make sense for Harris. Oh, well, I'm just glad this series is done. It was really petering off toward the end.

The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable

The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable - Patrick Lencioni I had to read this for work. :|

It's fine for what it is, but I'm not stupid. Not for one second did I think this was just a story; I knew there was a long, drawn-out lesson to be learned. And, if I'm honest, I'd rather you just tell me the damned lesson and not make me read a fable about it. I guess the fable is the spoonful of sugar to help the lessons go down.

Shades of Grey: A Novel

Shades of Grey: A Novel - Jasper Fforde Nope. can't do it.

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown - Holly Black This started off strong, but ended up pretty weak. I had to convince myself to finish it, to be honest.

The Casual Vacancy

The Casual Vacancy - Tom Hollander, J.K. Rowling I tried reading this (almost exactly) a year ago. I made it less than 100 pages before giving up. Here we go again.

Eleanor & Park

Eleanor & Park - Rainbow Rowell Wow. So freaking good.

Argo: How the CIA and Hollywood Pulled Off the Most Audacious Rescue in History

Argo: How the CIA and Hollywood Pulled Off the Most Audacious Rescue in History - 'Antonio Mendez', 'Matt Baglio' Loved the movie, made it through the book.

The Witch's Daughter

The Witch's Daughter - Paula Brackston I got to page 188 before finally giving up. But I might one day finish this, so I'm adding the page for my own sanity.
Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls - David Sedaris After the unimpressive "Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk...", I was glad to have the old Sedaris essays/short stories back. I like breaking the silence of my workplace with a giant "ha!" or a horribly-timed snort.
